​Performing Art's Class Offerings

The Performing Arts program at Gateway High School offers students opportunities to explore their creativity through music and theater. With a focus on skill development, artistic expression, and live performance, students participate in concerts, productions, and competitions throughout the year. The program encourages collaboration, confidence, and cultural appreciation. Open to all students, performing arts at Gateway helps build lifelong skills in a supportive and dynamic environment.

  • The purpose of this course is to provide students with instruction in the development of musicianship and technical skills through study of varied band literature. Please find the syllabi for my class below!

  • The GHS Choir Program is a vibrant series of ensemble classes that focus on choral singing, musicianship, vocal technique, and music appreciation. Open to all Gateway High School students, each year-long course earns 1 elective credit. Choir members will collaborate with their peers, cultivate strong performance habits, and gain experience as dedicated members of a musical ensemble.

    Daily class activities may include vocal warm-ups and technique development, music theory and sightreading exercises, repertoire rehearsal, and team-building games or activities. Students will complete regular formative assessments, such as theory quizzes, part recordings, sightreading checks, and listening assignments.

  • The purpose of this course is to develop and deepen students’ understanding of stylistic elements and performance practices found in contemporary popular music and jazz. Students will explore and perform a wide range of diverse and representative repertoire, gaining experience in ensemble collaboration, stylistic interpretation, and idiomatic performance techniques.

    Course content includes the rehearsal and performance of various popular and jazz works, as well as an introduction to basic improvisation, allowing students to express musical ideas creatively within structured and spontaneous settings.

  • Music World is a course that introduces students to the global diversity of music across cultures and time periods. Students explore traditional, classical, and contemporary music from around the world, learning about instruments, styles, and cultural significance. The course includes listening activities, discussions, and basic performance or composition opportunities. It fosters cultural appreciation, musical understanding, and critical listening skills in a creative and engaging environment.

  • The purpose of this course is to provide experience in theatre arts and literature. The content includes, performance of dramatic literature, a short study of theatre history, analysis of dramatic literature, play production procedures, the study of acting methods, work in acting and directing experiences. In addition, the content includes a study of all areas of technical theatre, including set, costume, and lighting design and practical application. Students are required to participate in all the acting activities of the class, including various performances in front of the class. This is a co-curricular class and participation in after school activities such as play rehearsals, productions, and drama festivals is encouraged. Journals and other writing and reading activities are required.​​
