Science Course Offerings

Gateway High School offers a comprehensive and engaging science program designed to prepare students for college, careers, and life. The curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based learning, real-world applications, and collaborative teamwork.

  • The purpose of this course is to provide students with exploratory and advanced activities in the structure and function of the components of the human body. Course content includes cellular process and tissues, the skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. This course is strongly recommended for college bound students interested in the biological sciences and medical field.

  • Astrology is the study of how the positions and movements of celestial bodies, like planets and stars, are believed to influence human behavior and events on Earth. It involves interpreting zodiac signs and horoscopes to provide insights into personality traits and future possibilities. While not a science, astrology is often explored as a cultural and historical practice.

  • The purpose of this course is to provide students with general exploratory experiences and activities in the fundamental concepts of life. Course content includes scientific method, scientific measurement, laboratory safety and use of apparatus, cell biology, cell reproduction, basic principles of genetics, classification and surveying of plants and animals.

  • The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop knowledge of the ways that humans interact with the natural environment.  The content should include, but not to be limited to: influence of technology on environment quality, use of conservation practices, biodiversity, environmental planning and waste management, environmental monitoring and policy, sustainability and population dynamics.

  • Forensic Science 1 is an introductory course that explores the scientific principles and techniques used in criminal investigations. Students learn about crime scene analysis, evidence collection, fingerprinting, and basic laboratory methods. The course emphasizes critical thinking and practical skills to understand how science is applied in solving crimes.

  • This course is designed to give students a secure knowledge of a body of facts and, at the same time, a broad understanding of the field of biology.  This course includes both a theoretical and practical focus. The core content includes but not limited to: cells, chemistry of life, genetics, ecology, evolution, human health and physiology.

  • This course allows students to integrate academic study with the acquisition of practical and experimental skills. Students will gain a wide range of practical skills which are essential to life in the 21st century.  Program content includes: stoichiometric relationships, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding, thermochemistry, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox, organic chemistry, measurement and data processing.

  • IB Physics is a challenging, college-level course that explores the fundamental principles of physics through both theoretical study and hands-on experiments. It covers topics such as mechanics, electricity, thermodynamics, and modern physics, emphasizing inquiry, analysis, and critical thinking. The course prepares students for the IB Diploma and further studies in science and engineering.

  • The purpose of this course is to provide students with a general knowledge of coastal and marine systems. Topics included: structure and chemistry of the ocean, marine life: vertebrates and invertebrates, marine ecosystem, ocean resources and human impact on aquatic systems.

  • Pre-IB Physics is an introductory course designed to prepare students for the rigor of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Physics program. It covers fundamental concepts in physics, including mechanics, energy, and waves, while emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and laboratory skills. This course builds a strong foundation for success in higher-level IB science studies.

  • Pre-IB Chemistry is a preparatory course designed to build a strong foundation in chemistry concepts and skills needed for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Chemistry program. It covers topics such as atomic structure, chemical reactions, and the periodic table, with a focus on developing critical thinking, laboratory techniques, and problem-solving abilities.
