The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme at Gateway High School is a magnet program that provides highly motivated, college-bound students the opportunity to participate in a rigorous curriculum for success at the university level and beyond. The program is a four-year course of study with two phases: the GHS Pre-Diploma Programme(Grades 9 & 10) and the IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12). Students apply in 8th grade to enter the program beginning in 9th grade.
GHS Pre-Diploma Program
The Pre-Diploma Program is designed for 9th and 10th graders. It provides an intensive and rigorous academic program that prepares students for successful transition into the IB Diploma Programme. Over the 2 years, the students build the fundamentals for in-depth study ofthe six core academic areas and are introduced to the attributes of the Learner Profile.
The teachers and staff begin cultivating the research skills, inquiry skills, and international mindedness that the students will need not only to be successful in the IB Diploma Programme but to become life-long learners and contributing community members.
IB Diploma Programme
The IB Diploma Programme provides a rigorous, challenging, internationally focused, broad and balanced educational experience for students. Students are required to study six subjects and a curriculum core concurrently over two years of study during the 11th & 12th grades. The programme is designed to equip students with the basic academic skills needed for: university study, further education and their chosen profession as well as developing the values and life skills needed to live a fulfilled and purposeful life.
The driving force behind the Diploma Programme is a philosophy about the nature of education, which is expressed in the IB mission statement:
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
